Hand vs Machine Stretch Wrap: Which One Does Your Warehouse Need?
Every warehouse that ships pallets eventually faces the same question: hand vs machine stretch wrap. The choice changes your labor cost, wrapping speed, load stability and damage rate. This guide compares the two so you can decide when to keep using hand stretch film, and
when automated machine stretch wrap will pay for itself.

Hand stretch film is applied manually with a dispenser. It is thin (typically 8–20 micron), lightweight, and flexible for irregular loads. It suits low-volume warehouses, mixed pallets, and quick shipping areas.
Machine stretch wrap is applied by an automatic or semi-automatic pallet wrapper. It runs wider (often 450–500mm), thinner per layer thanks to pre-stretch, and applies consistent tension every time.
| Factor | Hand Stretch Wrap | Machine Stretch Wrap |
| Labor | High (manual) | Low (automated) |
| Speed | Slow | Very fast |
| Consistency | Variable | Highly consistent |
| Load stability | Good | Excellent |
| Film usage | Higher waste | Optimized (pre-stretch) |
| Best for | Low volume, mixed loads | High volume, uniform pallets |
You want to cut film cost per pallet through pre-stretch (often 200–400% stretch)

Hand film: 8–20 micron, 300–500mm width, clear/black/blue, single or double-sided cling.
Machine film: 17–36 micron, 450–500mm width, UV-stabilized options, pre-stretched formulations.
Use hand stretch film for flexibility and low volume; switch to machine stretch wrap once volume or damage justifies a wrapper. Most growing warehouses run both.
