Surface protective film is a thin, self-adhesive polyethylene layer applied to panels, profiles, glass and sheets during manufacturing, transport and installation. Its job is to absorb scratches, dust and stains — then peel off cleanly. This guide explains how it works and how industrial buyers avoid the most common complaint: sticky residue.
How Protective Film Works
A protective film consists of a PE or PET film coated with a low-tack acrylic adhesive. It sticks firmly enough to stay on during handling, but is engineered to peel off without leaving glue.
The worst outcome is adhesive left on the surface after peeling. This happens when:
Protective film only works if it comes off cleanly. Always specify no-residue, substrate-matched film, respect the exposure window, and test first.
